Artist Statement
I am a visual artist currently pursuing a BFA in Studio Art at Endicott College. I am an oil painter who specializes in portraiture and still-lives. I incorporate my photography to make my reference photos and add them to my collection to show my skills in a different discipline. My work is inspired by moments in art history and the different aesthetics of each generation of artists. For example, I work with traditional motifs that refer to the Baroque era of the 1600s. I'm interested in using tradition to engage more meaningfully with history.
Getting into character is essential to the creation of my paintings. To fully detach from the modern world, I listen to classical music and opera to connect to bygone times. The compositions and palettes I depict directly reference specific artists, such as Caravaggio. My still-lifes take inspiration from the Dutch Golden Age. My practice is not only a way for me to meaningfully connect with the past, but also an opportunity to bring the viewer into this experience.
I'm currently working on a series of portraits in oil paint. They each portray a person with whom I share a close relationship with. The process of making these paintings is an exercise in empathy and connection. As I move through the work, I experience and internalize their emotions, such as sadness, melancholy, anger, and fear. I find beauty in states of feeling that are difficult to speak about. Painting is a process I use to shed light on them. The last five are still-lifes that symbolically represent each person. The subjects select objects that are meaningful to them. I then utilize these objects to construct a composition. I allow them to pick out the objects that mean something to them. Through portraiture and still-life, I am communicating different states of being, which range from the visible to the invisible.
